SEO, AEO, and GEO without the shortcuts.
These terms describe overlapping work on discovery and useful answers. This ZYFISTA guide explains what changes on a website, what needs evidence, and what cannot be promised.
Three terms, one usable foundation.
What is SEO?
Search engine optimization improves how a website can be discovered, understood, and evaluated in search. It combines technical accessibility, useful content, page structure, internal links, and credible evidence. Its purpose is relevant discovery rather than repeating a phrase across every heading.
What is AEO?
Answer engine optimization is a common industry term for making information easy to retrieve as a direct answer. A service definition, comparison, or buyer question should be answered clearly before supporting detail. This helps readers and retrieval systems without requiring a separate page for every question.
What is GEO?
Generative engine optimization describes work that helps AI-powered search systems understand and retrieve relevant website content. This includes crawlable pages, consistent entity information, factual answers, useful examples, and evidence. It does not guarantee that an AI system will mention or cite a business.
How the terms overlap
| Term | Focus | Practical work |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Discovery in search | Accessible pages, relevant information and clear site structure |
| AEO | Answers to specific questions | Direct explanations with supporting context and evidence |
| GEO | Retrieval in generative search | Useful, attributable content and provider-specific access checks |
These descriptions overlap. They are not three independent ranking systems or proof that a business needs three retainers.
How can a business improve AI search visibility?
Start with the pages customers use to evaluate your service. Each change should help a person make a decision as well as help a crawler understand the page.
- Make the page accessible. Check response codes, robots rules, canonical URLs, server-rendered content, and internal links. A sitemap lists pages; it does not guarantee indexing.
- Answer the buyer's question directly. Explain the service, who needs it, what is included, and the factors affecting scope. Follow the short answer with examples and constraints.
- Show genuine evidence. Connect claims to team expertise, approved project screenshots, sources, or documented implementation. Distinguish practice projects from client work.
- Keep the entity consistent. Use the same agency name, contact details, production domain, and organization profiles. Personal profiles belong to team members.
- Measure outcomes. Compare indexed pages, relevant queries, landing-page clicks, referrals, and qualified enquiries over time. Record the question, date, platform, and cited URL when manually checking AI answers.
What does this look like for a service page?
A Shopify development page should explain when the platform fits, what a theme or integration project includes, and when custom development is justified. It should link to a storefront project and a practical comparison. Separate near-identical pages for every city or AI assistant do not add useful evidence.
Questions worth asking before buying AI-search work
Is GEO real or just agency hype?
AI-powered search is a real discovery channel, but that does not validate every service sold under the GEO label. Ask an agency to specify the pages, technical fixes, evidence and measurement it will deliver. Treat unsupported citation multipliers, guaranteed recommendations and mass-generated question pages as claims requiring evidence, rather than as a standard optimization method.
Does AI search replace traditional SEO?
No. Google's generative search features rely on its Search systems, and its current guidance treats optimization for those features as SEO. Other assistants can use different retrieval sources and crawler controls. Clear pages, sound crawlability and genuine expertise remain useful; a new acronym does not remove the need to diagnose the existing website.
Does llms.txt make a website appear in AI answers?
An llms.txt file is not proof of discovery or citation. Google explicitly says it does not use these files for Search visibility. ZYFISTA maintains a navigation summary for systems or readers that choose to use it, but it is not presented as a ranking factor. Evaluate each provider's documented behaviour instead of assuming one file has universal support.
Can I allow search access without allowing model training?
Where a provider exposes separate controls, yes. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for search and GPTBot for training, with independently configurable robots rules. Perplexity documents its search crawler separately too. User-requested fetching and other providers can behave differently, so review the relevant documentation and infrastructure rules; one robots directive is not a universal data-use policy.
Does being crawled or indexed guarantee a citation?
No. Crawling means a system can fetch content; indexing means it can retain a searchable representation; citation is a later selection in an answer. Passing technical checks does not guarantee any of those outcomes. For Google, inspect indexing and snippet eligibility in Search Console. For manual AI checks, record the actual cited URL and distinguish it from an unlinked brand mention.
Do backlinks, entity markup or brand mentions guarantee recommendations?
No single signal guarantees a recommendation. Accurate organization details and genuine references help people identify and assess a business, but schema is not proof of authority. Publish consistent agency information, link real team expertise and support claims with visible evidence. Do not buy invented endorsements or describe third-party mentions as a proven citation formula.
How should a small agency measure AI referrals?
Start with landing-page visits and qualified enquiries, then segment identifiable assistant referrals in your existing analytics. Keep a dated manual log with the question, platform, search mode, cited URL and answer context. Referrers may be missing and answers vary, so separate observed visits from citation checks. OpenAI documents a ChatGPT referral parameter; it still does not reveal every assistant-influenced enquiry.
What makes a useful topical content plan?
A useful plan covers related decisions with evidence instead of publishing a page for every wording variation. Connect the question to a clear answer, a relevant service and an original project example. Identify what is missing before making claims. Topic coverage is a reader benefit, not a quota or a promise that a search system will recognize the site as authoritative.
For a practical example of evidence boundaries, read the OGz case study: it separates documented checks from outstanding outage acceptance rather than turning an architecture choice into a guaranteed outcome.
What does not guarantee a citation?
Google documents no special AI markup or AI text file requirement for its generative search features. Structured data should describe visible content accurately. Allowing a search crawler makes access possible; it does not force indexing, a ranking, or inclusion in an answer. Search access and model-training access are separate controls where the provider supports them.
